There is no way to make this sound anything other than a promotion, but this is a pretty useful app that at the risk of sounding rather melodramatic, could save lives.
Called BuddyGuard, the free app, available on iOS, Android and BlackBerry and launching today in the U.K. House of Lords, makes good use of a smartphone’s sensors and equipment to provide a suite of personal security functions.
So for example, if you are going to an area or meeting that is a bit risky you can activate the app and trigger a pre-set auto-capture mode so your every move, and every thing you say or hear, is recorded and stored on remote servers in 30 second batches, as well as emailed to designated contacts, should the dodgy person you are going to meet turn out to be a crook. The app will also fire the camera every 10 seconds and stream those as well.
If you get knocked on the head, the app uses the accelerometer in your smartphone and sends an alert if the phone is in free fall for more than one second.
If you fail to check in with your PIN code after that pre-set time, it will send an alert message. Say you come round and the crook sees you have this app running (he’s a techy-sort of a crook) and he demands you shut it off. You can enter a distress PIN which seemingly shuts the app down, but in reality it sends an alert message.
The thing can even alert your contacts if you have been in a crash. The app monitors the accelerometer for g-forces greater than 5G.
According to Colin Anawaty, founder of BuddyGuard, the app is aimed at, “students travelling, anyone working in unfamiliar areas, or anyone who has to make financial transactions with third parties. It is also something that high net worth individuals might find very useful.”
The basic app is free, but the app’s makers, MPower offer a premium service. For $9.99 a month (payable one year in advance) you get $100,000 of rescue costs and up to $1 million for emergency medical evacuation through international recovery agency GEOS, and backed by Lloyd’s of London.
